AO3 Meme

I'm working on an actual post, but in the meantime, have a meme that I've seen floating around here and there.

My AO3 life )
skieswideopen: (Sleepy Hollow: Abbie & Ichabod 2)
I should be writing, but hey, let's do a meme instead. Borrowed from [personal profile] corvidology.

My Yuletide history )
skieswideopen: Elizabeth Weir from Stargate Atlantis (SG: Weir)
1. Fandom nominations are now open at [community profile] space_swap | [livejournal.com profile] space_swap. There's info here and here, nomination coordination here and here, and you can nominate fandoms here. Just in case you've got a space fandom or two you'd like to see some fic or art for.

2. For the Being Human (US/Canada) fans: There are now actor commentaries available for the first season of Being Human. I haven't listened to them yet, but knowing how adorable the cast is, I suspect they'll be fun.

3. TV Meme, or I watch an awful lot of TV. )
skieswideopen: John Sheppard & Samantha Carter on Atlantis (SG: John & Sam)
Meme! Because apparently I have nothing to say about, you know, my actual life.

Pick a number from the list and I will do my best to answer it in the comments.

1 - Your current OTP
2 - A pairing you initially didn't consider but someone changed your mind
3 - A pairing you have never liked and probably never will
4 - A pairing you wish you liked but just can't
5 - Have you added anything stupid/cracky/hilarious to your fandom; if so, what
6 - What's the longest you've ever been in a fandom
7 - Do you remember your first OTP; if so, who was in it
8 - Do you prefer characters from live-action series or anime series
9 - Has the internet caused you to stop liking any fandoms; if so, which and why
10 - Name a fandom you didn't care/think about until you saw it all over your social network sites
11 - How do you feel about the other people in your current fandom
12 - Your favourite fan artist/author gives you one request; what do you ask for
13 - Your favourite fanart or fan artist
14 - Your favourite fanfiction or fan author
15 - Choose a song at random; which OTP does it remind you of
16 - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas)
17 - A ship you've abandoned and why
18 - A pairing you ship that you don't think anyone else ships

skieswideopen: Vala Mal Doran and Samantha Carter (SG: Sam & Vala)
1. [personal profile] sid is playing host this week over at [community profile] fic_promptly. Today's theme is When I'm Sixty-Four (i.e., future fic). Go leave some prompts! Or maybe fill a prompt. Whichever you feel like doing.

2. The initial prompt claiming period at [livejournal.com profile] apocalypse_kree is now over, which means people are free to claim additional prompts if they want to. So if you had your eye on a second or third prompt, now's your chance to grab it.

3. With only three hours left in the voting, it looks like Vala is going to beat Rodney at the [livejournal.com profile] clubstargate character brackets. It's a bit of a shock, but I've been rooting for Vala since Rodney beat Sam, so I'm happy to see it. This means the final round is going to come down to Vala versus John, which should be interesting. ([livejournal.com profile] clubstargate is the social community for [livejournal.com profile] stargateland, so non-SGL members won't be able to see the results.)

4. This very Keirsey/Myers-Briggs-esque Harry Potter sorting quiz puts me in House Ravenclaw (64% Ravenclaw, 53% Hufflepuff, 46% Slytherin and 35% Gryffindor). No real surprise there.

5. Pew Internet has just released a report on cellphones and individual facts keep popping up on my Twitter feed and all I can think is that my refusal to get a smartphone (which is really a refusal to pay exorbitant data plan rates, because I do love gadgets and smartphones themselves are very appealing) is making me feel very, very old.

Day 08 - A show everyone should watch

I'm not presumptuous enough to say that everyone should watch anything, but one show that I think is worth watching is Babylon 5.

It's far from a perfect show--the dialogue is sometimes clunky, the acting often uneven, and the special effects generally haven't held up. What B5 offers is some of the best plotting and character development anywhere. The first season is full of throwaway lines that later prove important, and mysteries that are all eventually solved--in logical fashion, in ways that are satisfying and make sense and suggest that the writers actually planned things out from the beginning. And all of the buildup makes the climax incredibly affecting.

But you do have to get through the first season to really appreciate it.

Day 06 - Favourite episode of your favourite TV show

Since the question is favourite rather than best, I'm going to go with "Bastille Day." This episode is the first time Lee really takes a stand based on principle, knowing that there might be a personal cost, and that willingness to do the right thing is the main reason I love the character, so this episode is one I tend to rewatch.

Day 07 - Least favorite episode of your favourite TV show

It's a toss-up between "Black Market" and the series finale. I think I'm going to go with "Black Market." This is the infamous episode that features not one, but two characters who come out of nowhere and are never mentioned again despite the episode's claim that they're incredibly important to one of the main characters. I think they could have gotten away with introducing one character this way, but two doesn't work. There should have been foreshadowing and there should have been follow-through and the absence of both is lousy writing.

I spent yesterday at a Dragon Boat Festival party, playing Mahjong and eating zongzi, and now I'm behind. Thus, two days in one!

Day 04 - Your favourite show ever

I've loved so many shows at different times for different reasons, Buffy and The X-Files and Firefly and Farscape. And there have other shows I've been passionately fannish about and whose characters I've loved, like SG1 and SGA and Forever Knight. Choosing between them is hard.

I think immediacy is going to win this one, though. I'm going to go with the new version Battlestar Galactica, which is both excellent quality and a show that I play with fannishly. Even if I did hate the ending. (Ask me again in a few months, and I may have a different answer.)

Day 05 - A show you hate

The Bachelor. It's possible that I'm being unfair because I've only seen about half and episode, but the concept is so utterly disturbing that I dislike it on principle. (I feel the same way about The Bachelorette.)

Day 03 - Your favourite new show (aired this TV season)

I'm going to go with The Good Wife again because I think I only picked up two new shows this season, and other one is more "guilty pleasure" than truly excellent television.

And since I've already talked about why I like the show, today I'll limit myself to one more reason: Kalinda Sharma (the law firm's PI) rocks.

Kalinda Sharma, played by Archie Panjabi

Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching

Am I watching any shows that seem unduly unpopular right now? I think most of the shows I care about are doing okay. Bad timing on this, really, since most things at high risk of being cancelled have been cancelled.

I'm going to go with The Good Wife, because it's not a show that I see come up often on my flist. I wasn't sure how that show was going to go, but it's ended up giving us some truly excellent female characters--layered and nuanced and complicated, with interesting friendships between them. And it passes the Bechdel Test pretty well every episode. I just hope it retains that focus, and doesn't shift too much toward her husband next season.

Since everyone else is doing it too...

Day 01 - A show that should have never been cancelled

Firefly, of course, mostly because I want to know what deep dark secrets Joss Whedon buried in everyone's past. But that's a common wish, so I'll go with a less obvious one instead.

It's a Canadian show about a centuries-old man who made a bad decision when he was young, and is now seeking redemption for the immense suffering that came about because of his decision. The limitations of his condition mean he's forced to pull away from the mortal woman who's rapidly falling in love with him for fear of endangering her, and every week we get flashbacks showing events from his past that are somehow related to his current situation. No, not that show.

The Collector aired for three seasons between 2004 and 2006. The main character is Morgan Pym, an ex-monk born in Nuremburg, Germany in 1322. As a young man, Morgan sold his soul to the devil in order to bring back the woman he loved after she died of the Bubonic Plague. They got ten years of happiness together, and then the devil came to collect on his end of the deal. But instead of sending Morgan to hell, he offered him a new deal: if Morgan would help the devil collect souls from other people whose deals were up, he'd be allowed to stay on Earth.

Fast forward to 2004. Morgan's now assigned to Vancouver, collecting his weekly quota of souls. (Well, really only one soul per week. He has a lot of free time. Especially since he doesn't sleep.) And then one day he's inspired by one of his clients to make a new deal: he gets forty-eight hours to help each of his clients try to make amends for all the damage their deals have caused. If they succeed, they get to avoid hell and go on living. And so Morgan gets to spend his days trying to help others achieve redemption, knowing there's almost no chance he can do the same for himself.

The shows had its share of flaws, and some parts that didn't really make sense (like the devil's motivation for agreeing to this new deal). But the creators say they had a plan, and I want to know what it was. The devil on the show is portrayed as so clever and powerful that it's clear he has to be getting something out of this deal, and I want to know what, and how it twists back on Morgan, and whether Morgan actually finds a way to outsmart the devil in the end. Basically, I wish it had been around longer so I could have found out how it was supposed to end.

I just looked at my list from the last time I did this, and so far, I've only finished one of the nine stories I posted about then. So maybe it's a good thing that this list is shorter.

Stories I've been working on )

The final count of my newest crop of WIPs: one Stargate piece featuring John/Cam, one Stargate/Battlestar Galactica crossover featuring Sam Carter/Kara Thrace (which was supposed to have been written ages ago for [community profile] sg_rarepairings, one gen BSG, and one gen BSG/Supernatural crossover. Last time it was all about Cam. Apparently I'm branching out.

The hijinks of various Stargate, Criminal Minds, and BSG characters. )
skieswideopen: Emily Prentiss from Criminal Minds (Criminal Minds: Prentiss)
This one seems to be spreading. Snagged from [personal profile] scrollgirl and [personal profile] bluflamingo.

1. I write down a list of 10 characters.

2. You choose however many of those you like and ask me a question about them. Examples: "What happens when 5 and 9 are forced to take care of a baby?" or "1, 4, and 8 walk into a bar. What happens next?" or "What does 3 do when s/he finds out that 10 is pregnant with 7's child?" You get the idea. :D

3. I tell you about these scenarios!

I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity
Update your journal with the answers to the questions
Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.

She asked:

1. If you could change one thing on Atlantis, what would you change?

You mean other than finding a way to get Cam there? And putting him and John on somewhat equal footing? (Hmm, I guess that would mean putting Sam in charge, and then putting both of them under her in different areas. And if we saw more of Sam, and of the three of them working together, that would be fantastic too.)

2. Where's your favourite place in Canada?

I haven't been west of Toronto or up to the Territories, so I'm missing huge swathes of the country, and it's possible that if I were to visit, say, Victoria or Yellowknife, I'd fall in love. Given those limitations, I'm going to say that Toronto is my favourite place. I love the life and the diversity and the amazing restaurants and the fact that I generally feel safe walking around by myself at 2am, and I'm really happy to be living here.

Halifax and Quebec City are both close runners-up.

3. Who's the most interesting character on Criminal Minds?

Most interesting? Depends on the episode... My favourite characters are Hotch and Prentiss, so I tend to be the most interested in them. Probably a little more in Prentiss, since I feel like we've seen less of her, and I'd like to know how she progressed from a teenage gothic rebel to FBI agent. I'm also kind of fascinated by Strauss, after the most recent episode.

4. Desert island fandom: what's the one fandom you'd take with you (not the actual show/book/whatever)

Can I just take my one little corner of the SGA fandom? This is the fandom where I've had the most interaction, so I'm kind of partial to it. Plus surely fans of a show about an expedition to a lost city have put more than average thought into how to survive in desert island scenarios. But some of the story finder requests scare me, and I think I'd like to leave those people behind.

5. Is it better to be cold and dry or warm and wet?

Depends...can I take steps to change my state? If so, I'd say cold and dry, since throwing on extra layers is easy. If not, then I think I'd go with warm and wet. But maybe that's just because it's November and I know I'm looking forward to months of cold.

I was out until 7am celebrating a high school friend's impending wedding via a road trip to Niagara Falls. I'm supposed to be meeting up with more friends this afternoon for Taste of the Danforth (i.e., standing in the street eating lots of Greek food, mostly meat on skewers) and again tonight for the UFC fight, assuming I can stay awake that long.

So, since I'm too awake to sleep more and too tired to actually think, I'm going to play in the meme that's going around.

Ask me my Top Five anything--fannish or non-fannish--and I'll answer in a new post.
skieswideopen: John Sheppard & Cameron Mitchell making guns with their hands (SG: John/Cam handguns)
There's a WIP meme going around, and since I have plenty of those, I thought I'd play. So...lines and snippets from various stories that I started and haven't yet finished. Five of the nine are John/Cam, three are gen, and one is another pairing. Two are from challenges (not exchanges) whose deadlines are now past, one is from a [livejournal.com profile] cliche_bingo fic, one is from my [community profile] cm_tropefic fic, and a couple are from stories I'm writing just for fun. At some point I'd like to finish all of these.

Snippets. )

Ganked from [personal profile] scrollgirl.

1. List the Star Trek series that you have seen. Indicate if you've seen all the episodes or some of them.
The Original Series: Most, maybe all.
The Animated Series: There's an animated series?
The Next Generation: Most, maybe all.
Deep Space Nine: Many. I missed some in the later seasons.
Voyager: Quite a few.
Enterprise: Some. I can't really be more specific than that.
