(For those who haven't read either, both stories are AU retellings of Continuum in which Cam looks up John during his year in the alternate timeline and discovers that John has left the Air Force and is now running a flying school. I recommend reading the original first.)

Summary: The party had a surreal feel to it, the cheerful celebration clashing badly with his own internal state of anxiety. John checked his watch, wondering how much longer he had to stay for, then realized that if he left, he'd be alone in his room again. He couldn't decide which was worse.

"That's really...impressive," Carter said, gazing up in awe at the almost-pine tree. "And they do this every year?"

I'd also like to point gleefully to the fic I received in this exchange, It's All Fun and Games Until... by randomfreshink. It's a wonderfully descriptive Vala and Sam friendship piece that isn't exactly what it appears at first, and it's both darker than it initially looks and a lot of fun.
