I participated in Remix this year, and my writer chose to remix my John-as-a-ghost trope story The Measure of Your Touch (SG1/SGA, John/Cam) into something a little darker, but completely plausible, appropriate subtitled "The Mortal Coil Remix." It's very well done, and a great example of how you can use remix to take a story in a completely different direction.

If you like John/Cam and don't mind going a little darker, check it out.

Night on Fic Mountain went live on Sunday, and I received not one, but two stories. I went into this exchange knowing my requests were all unmatchable, so I'm delighted two people were kind enough to write for me.

My official story was Oblivion (Intelligence, Gen, 1774 words), which features Gabriel and Riley trying with limited success to get some downtime by hanging out with some of Riley's friends from the Secret Service.

I also received a treat: Alterations (Life, Gen, 657 words), which is a great pre-series look at Charlie and Constance.

There are lots of other stories too, in various rare fandoms, which you should check out if you're into that sort of thing.

Tropes

I've been thinking about tropes while contemplating [community profile] tagyourit nominations. So for day seven of the "ten posts in ten days challenge," have a few favourite tropes/scenarios.

So I got an awesome Battlestar Galactica/Firefly fusion from [livejournal.com profile] lls_mutant for [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange called We Are Not Shining Stars. It combines the two universes beautifully with a look at how the resistance on Caprica might have gone a little differently had the crew of Serenity been around. If that's a premise that appeals to you, I encourage you to check it out.

Also! [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange has now opened collections for all four years on AO3, in case you happen to prefer reading fic there rather than on LJ. (Posting to AO3 is optional, so you'll probably still find more fic on the LJ community, but I know some people prefer the AO3 interface.) I've re-posted my own fic here.

And for anyone who enjoys crossovers, but didn't feel like participating in an all-out exchange, the mods of [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange are running a prompt meme on AO3. Everyone, whether they participated in the exchange or not, is welcome to leave up to five prompts using any of the fandoms that have been eligible for the exchange in the past. And, of course, anyone is welcome to fill any prompt that catches their eye. (Previously eligible fandoms: 2012 | 2011 | 2010 | 2009)

Five BSG characters have been nominated so far for the [livejournal.com profile] blasters_wands exchange. One of them is Jake the dog. I'm kind of curious now what the requests are going to look like. (Fandom & character nominations are currently open if anyone's looking for something to do. All science fiction, fantasy, and horror fandoms are eligible, and it's a multimedia exchange, so you don't have to be a writer to participate.)

I've been marathoning Due South fic lately, and one of the things I've been noticing is just how prevalent certain themes and tropes are. (Particularly in the porn. Biting, for example.) I suspect that's true in every fandom, but I notice here more than in, say, Stargate. Probably because I read a wider array of pairings in Stargate (and possibly in part because I don't read McShep). I expected a certain amount of cross-pollination, but the extent of the influence is kind of interesting. (There are also noticeable patterns in the errors that annoy me. In Stargate, it's mostly things like having officers threatened with dishonourable discharge under DADT; in Due South it's mostly errors related to Canada. Which is natural given the premise and settings of each show.)

Fall television season is nearly upon us, but there isn't really anything I'm especially excited about. I'll probably give Revolution a try since it's our new sci-fi offering, and I may watch Elementary. I'm not exactly in desperate need of more television to watch, but is there anything else people are excited about?

Also, I really need to get on a better sleep schedule.
skieswideopen: Cameron Mitchell and Carolyn Lam from SG1 (SG: Cam & Carolyn)
I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange, because I do love a good crossover, and I like the stories I wrote for it the last two years.

I'm still planning to finish my fic for [livejournal.com profile] apocalypse_kree and [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon because they both allow late posting.

I also need to write something for [livejournal.com profile] spook_me.

And I'm going to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] sg_flyboys, assuming it runs again this year.

Plus a couple of multimedia gift exchanges.

So I'm dithering on [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa. It's still tempting, but I'm feeling a little over-committed right now, even with a grading-free December.

ION, I got presents! Check out all the Carolyn Lam icons that [livejournal.com profile] roeskva made me as part of the Fall Fandom Free-For-All! (Which I also need to make something for.)
skieswideopen: The Odyssey floating over Earth (SG: Odyssey)
Stories written: 19

Pairings: 10 John/Cam; 1 Teyla/Vala; 1 John/Kate; 6 gen. Plus my John/Rodney, John/Teyla, John/Elizabeth, John/Cam story.

It looks like I'm pretty much a single pairing girl.
The rest of my thoughts on my fic. )

1. Finish fiddling with second [livejournal.com profile] apocaplyse_kree fic and post it. Due September 30th.
2. Write [livejournal.com profile] sg_rarepairings fic. Due October 27th.
3. Write [livejournal.com profile] spook_me fic. (Teal'c! Vala! Halloween! And John/Cam, of course, as John temporarily joins SG-1.) Due October 27th.
4. Write [livejournal.com profile] xfileyourfandom fic. (The X-Files was the first fandom I joined; I had to do it. Besides, John and Cam as FBI agents? Irresistible! Unless I make Ronon and Teyla the FBI agents instead....) Due November 3rd, with some flexibility.
5. Fandom Free-For-All fic? (There's a few people looking for John/Cam there. And then I could ask for more John/Cam. But given how many other things I have due around that time, I'm not sure I can do it.) Due October 29th, with a little flexibility.

At least it looks like [livejournal.com profile] sg_flyboys is going to be delayed for a little bit.

I've finished one [livejournal.com profile] apocalypse_kree story, and the second is nearly done, with just a bit more polishing to do. (Why yes, I did decide to go ultra-depressing by destroying the world twice this year. For those who are interested, one's a gen story with lots of John/Cam interaction, and the other's a John/Cam story with almost no interaction of any sort. So together they add up to almost one full John/Cam story.)

Having finished those stories, my thoughts have turned to [livejournal.com profile] spook_me. I got my prompts yesterday, and now I'm trying to decide whether to make it a John/Cam story or a straight-up SG-1 story. On the one hand, John/Cam is always good; on the other hand, if John's not there then Teal'c will be, and that has the potential for all sorts of awesomeness. Hmm, maybe I can have Teal'c show up halfway through and get the best of both worlds. Or maybe I should cut out the rest of SG-1 and just focus on John/Cam. If everyone is in there, this story is going to run long, and I have to get my [livejournal.com profile] sg_rarepairings story done too. (Not to mention the next chapter of my dissertation. Yay, data analysis?) But Sam! And Vala! I mean, Vala on Halloween would be almost as much fun as Teal'c. (Poor Daniel's getting left out no matter what, I think. He's going to be off on a convenient research trip.) Decisions, decisions.
