skieswideopen: Star Trek Discovery: Michael Burnham and Sylvia Tilly (Star Trek: Burnham and Tilly)
So I see Paramount backtracked and decided to get the rest of the world--or at least a good chunk of it--Star Trek: Discovery in a more timely fashion. I wonder how many people will sign up for Paramount+ just for that?

And of course, just as Lucifer gets interesting again after a bit of hit-and-miss season, it gets cancelled. So very sad.

I'm just hoping they didn't decide to end the season (and now series) on a cliffhanger.

ETA: And here's an article about the upcoming cliffhanger. Well, maybe someone will write a proper fic ending.

Wow, Madam Secretary, that's really not what I was expecting you to do. At all. But it could be an interesting season. (And now I see why they've steered clear of using actual party names.)

And now that I have some idea how the season will look, I guess I can write that section of my Yuletide letter!

One of the things I miss from my days in a megafandom is knowing that no matter what I want to know, there's a good chance that some other, more dedicated fan has already researched it, analyzed it, and written it up in detail. When I was in Stargate fandom and was struck by idle curiosity about, say, what the various characters' military ribbons meant, why, someone else had already done all the work of figuring it out! I think there might even have been a chart, with pictures.

Small fandoms, sadly, don't get that kind of attention, which is why I'm now wondering why they had Dmitri wearing a major's insignia when they were calling him a captain, with no real way of finding out. (Or was it supposed to be a junior lieutenant's insignia and he was later promoted? But it looks like a major's insignia, at least if I'm interpreting Wikipedia correctly. Ivan had a captain's insignia, so clearly they did some research and Dmitri's insignia was deliberate. But why?) (ETA: And apparently both Dmitri and Ivan were wearing Air Force patches? Despite Dmitri being described as an army captain and Ivan describing himself as an army captain. And then there are the Ministry of Justice patches. How does that all fit together?)

It looks like Sleepy Hollow and Saving Hope are both trying to reboot their shows a little bit. They've both resolved a bunch of old plotlines--especially Sleepy Hollow--and whittled their casts down. I assume we'll be getting some new characters as the season progresses.

I'm enjoying both so far.

1. Fandom nominations are now open at [community profile] space_swap | [livejournal.com profile] space_swap. There's info here and here, nomination coordination here and here, and you can nominate fandoms here. Just in case you've got a space fandom or two you'd like to see some fic or art for.

2. For the Being Human (US/Canada) fans: There are now actor commentaries available for the first season of Being Human. I haven't listened to them yet, but knowing how adorable the cast is, I suspect they'll be fun.

3. TV Meme, or I watch an awful lot of TV. )

I still need to upload my Day in the Life pictures, but in the meantime...Sleepy Hollow!

Quick review of the pilot with minor spoilers )

So yeah, I'm definitely planning to keep watching. And I think I need some new icons.
skieswideopen: Toby Logan from The Listener (TL: Toby Logan)
TIFF closes tomorrow, so I went down for one last film tonight: Bright Days Ahead. My TIFF movies this year have all had a romantic bent, which is a nice change from the really creepy and rather bloody Japanese serial killer movie I watched the last time I went to the festival. (I did not end up spending the day downtown the way I'd planned. When I woke up this morning and saw just how cold it was supposed to get tonight, I decided the better plan was to go home and pick up some warmer clothing, including a winter coat. Given how long I spent lined up outside, I think it was the right decision.)

Haven was back tonight! Except in Canada, where they've decided not to show it until December. Yeah, I'm not sure what they're thinking either. It's a little frustrating. But apparently we get Craig Olejnik as a guest star this season! It'll be interesting to see him in something besides The Listener. (Incidentally, the season finale The Listener aired a couple of weeks ago, thus concluding a rather disappointing season. I love the characters and I enjoyed some of the episode premises, but the writing and dialogue just weren't there for me. I'm not sure exactly what's wrong, but it's missing something.)

It's exciting to see the new television season starting up! The three shows I'm planning to pick up this fall are Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Almost Human, and Sleepy Hollow, but I'm also waiting to see if anything else gets rave reviews. (I'm also curious to see how new fandoms get incorporated among tag wranglers. And how Yuletide gets handled. Interesting times!)

Plans for this weekend: transcribe some interviews, visit with my sister and nephew, do some cleaning, and sort out some health insurance claims. Such excitement! Oh, and maybe I'll work on my Being Human US/Canada primer for [community profile] tv_talk. That'll be fun!

I seem to have less to say about this season overall. I'm still enjoying it, but perhaps not as much as the previous two? There's still time for it to pick up, though.
