Yuletide 2012
Dear Yuletide Writer:
Thank you so much for writing for me! I'm very excited to read whatever you come up with!
I've included a bunch of information here in case you're in search of inspiration. I'm not too worried about whether or not you read all of it (optional details are optional!), but if you do, I hope some of it proves helpful to you.
Things I generally like: I'm fond of a variety of story types. Action, plot, introspection, character studies, and slice of life are all good. So are first times of all kinds, outsider POVs, competence, characters being awesome, friendship, understated romance, stories that touch on the characters' pasts, stories that pick up on dropped threads from the show, and happy, hopeful, or bittersweet endings. (Obviously not all together!)
Things I prefer to avoid or tend to be very picky about: character bashing, gender-bending, incest, mpreg, crack, humiliation, major power imbalances in romantic or sexual relationships (including Dom/sub), BDSM, jealousy and possessiveness treated positively, long and detailed descriptions of recoveries from traumatic events, and permanent mental or physical injuries to major characters that don't occur in canon.
For this particular exchange, because fic in these fandoms is so rare, I'd also rather not go into complete AUs where the characters fill different roles than they do in canon (high school AUs, coffee shop AUs, hospital AUs, etc.).
Other stuff: Porn is fine, but I tend to find the lead-up more interesting, so I'm not big on PWP. Character death is okay if that's where the story takes you. Same with non-con, although I'd rather my requested characters not be directly involved.
Also, because apparently it's a common question, holiday-themed fic is fine and fic that has nothing to do with the holidays is equally fine. Gift exchanges, drunken confessions at holiday parties, Canada Day barbeques, and stories that have nothing to do with any holiday are all equally welcome. (Well, except maybe in Justified, where a Canada Day celebration might be a bit out of place.)
Specific Requests
My requests are copied and pasted below (plus a quick summary of each show for the curious). I've included a bunch of story ideas because as a writer, I like having prompts to work with. If you don't, then please feel free to ignore them. Or modify them. Or steal one from one show for another. Whatever works for you.
Fandom: The Listener
Requested Characters: Toby Logan, Michelle McCluskey, Alvin Klein
A telepathic paramedic helps the Toronto police (and later the RCMP) with difficult-to-solve cases.
I love the premise of the The Listener. A telepathic paramedic! Or a telepathic police consultant! Either way it's kind of awesome, especially when it gets into the issues that can arise from being a telepath in a world where most people don't know telepathy exists.
I love Toby's compassion, and his inability to walk away from people who need help. I love that he chose to be a paramedic so he could help people. I love that he managed to hold onto all of this despite the challenges of his childhood. I love Toby's friendship with Oz, and the relative ease with which OZ accepts Toby's abilities, even if he does sometimes try to turn them to his own advantage. I love the IIB team's competence and dedication to their jobs. I'm happy to see any of the characters show up, whether they were requested or not.
I've requested three characters and I'd be delighted to see all three, but I'd be equally happy with any two out of three.
For Toby and Michelle or Toby and Alvin or all three of them together: I'd love anything that deals with Toby's telepathy in some way. Learning something about Toby's abilities or their effect on his life, maybe, or looking at what it's like for Michelle and/or Alvin to work with a telepath. Have them talk about it over drinks, have Toby help one of them out in some way (or have them help Toby), put them into the middle of a local emergency, let Toby be a paramedic again and have IIB along for the ride...whatever you like.
Alternately, if you wanted to pick up the season one storylines about Toby's missing mother and/or kidnapped-as-an-infant brother, or address the fact that some less-than-savoury people might find great value in having their own pet telepath and what that could mean for Toby's safety, that would be fantastic too. I'd also enjoy something that touches on Toby's childhood--maybe meeting one of the kids he knew in foster care or one of his former foster families or something.
For Alvin and Michelle, I love their mutual respect for each other, and their trust in each other's competence, and I'd enjoy reading anything that touches on their professional relationship or how they got there or having the two of them work together as a team. Something that takes them out of their work environment and lets them support each other as friends would be great too. We know next to nothing about Alvin's personal life, and very little about Michelle's apart from her husband, so filling in some gaps there could be fun.
Fic that focuses on friendship or professional relationships is great, and so are canon and OC pairings. I'm not particularly interested in Toby/Oz or Toby/Michelle as pairings.
One last possibility: As of episode 3.08 of The Listener, The Listener and Flashpoint are officially set in the same universe. If you happen to watch both and feel like writing a crossover, that would be awesome too. The IIB and Team One working together in some capacity, or paramedic!Toby called in as support for Team One, or Team One called in to rescue Toby, or Toby (and possibly other members of the IIB) hanging out with some of Team One. Or a crossover ship, if there's one that works for you (ideally without breaking up anyone's canon relationship). Toby/Winnie? Toby/Leah? Toby/Spike? If you go this route, feel free to leave out Michelle and Alvin if they don't fit the story. And obviously I don't expect a crossover! I promise I will love a non-crossover story just as much.
Regardless of the direction of the story, I'd rather not see Toby blurting out his secret to all and sundry as if it's no big deal. I absolutely love it when new people find out he's telepathic--I adore secrets being revealed and seeing the reactions to those secrets--but I think it works better if he has a reason for telling. Either circumstances make it unavoidable (e.g., there's no other way to explain the completely vital information he happens to have) or he's decided after a great deal of thought that they're close enough to him that he wants them to know.
Fandom: Flashpoint
Requested Characters: Mike "Spike" Scarlatti
An ensemble show focusing on the fictional Strategic Response Unit, a Toronto police unit that specializes in high-risk situations such as explosives, hostage situations, and counter-terrorism. Basically SWAT, but with a lot more psychological profiling and negotiating.
I love Team One's competence. I love the fact that they try to negotiate first and shoot only when necessary. I love that they CAN go all badass, kicking in doors and jumping from balconies, when they have to. And I love the compassion the show demonstrates for nearly everyone involved in the situations the SRU faces--subjects, victims, and police alike.
I'm asking for Spike because geek with combat skills! I love that he can wield a keyboard and a gun with equal competence. I love his sense of humour. I love his courage. I love his optimism. I love that he works hard at being a peacemaker on the team. I love his affection for his family and his teammates.
My main wish for this story is to see Spike being awesome. Spike getting a chance to show off on the job. (Bombs! Tech! Negotiating! Guns!) Or something about how he joined the SRU. Or something more personal: his family, living on his own for the first time, running into people from his past, what he does with his free time. Or combine the two and have a difficult situation come up on his day off that lets him use his skills.
I love Sam/Jules, but I tend to think one pairing among Team One members is enough. However, if you're looking to write team ship fic, an AU where Sam turns to Spike post-Jules might be interesting. (I love both Sam and Jules, though, so please don't make anyone the bad guy. Sometimes things just don't work out.) Ship fic between people who aren't on the same team is fine too. I'd prefer to stay away from cheating and breaking up canon marriages.
If, for whatever reason, a Spike story isn't clicking for you, I'd be happy to read a story about Dean Parker instead. Maybe something about his decision to reconnect with his father and move to Toronto, or what it's like adjusting to living with his father, or about his decision to become a cop and his father's reaction to that, or maybe spending time with another member of the SRU in some capacity, or getting advice from one of them on something. (I'm completely happy to stick to Spike; this is only here to provide another option in case one's wanted.)
I love all of the characters, and I'm delighted to see any of them show up, but if you're debating about which ones to bring in besides Spike, I will confess to loving Sam, Jules, and Greg just a little more. But seriously, if you want to write someone else, please go for it. Or if you just want to write all Spike all the time, that's great too.
ETA: Spike/Winnie is also fine as a pairing. Spike & Sam friendship fic would be awesome. And I'm in Canada, so I've seen all of the current season and you don't need to worry about spoilers. (You know, in case I didn't give you enough ideas up above. Obviously, it doesn't matter if you don't see this.)
Finally, as I mentioned in my sign-up for The Listener, if you happen to watch both shows, a crossover could be fun. But that's completely and totally optional, and not at all expected.
Fandom: Murdoch Mysteries
Requested Characters: William Murdoch, James Pendrick, Julia Ogden
A police detective in late 19th/early 20th century Toronto uses advanced-for-the-time forensic techniques to solve crimes, aided by a female coroner.
I've requested three characters and I'm happy to read about all three, but I'm equally happy to read about just Murdoch and Pendrick, or just Murdoch and Ogden. I love all three of these characters for their intelligence, their courage, their dedication to logic, and their completely sincere enthusiasm for science and what it might do for the world. I also love their general decency as human beings, and their progressiveness (for the most part) on the issues that were common in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
For William Murdoch and James Pendrick - These two have so much in common as men of science who are enthralled with the future that it seems a shame that the show always sets them at odds. I'd really like to see them finally come together as friends (or more, if you're so inclined). Maybe Murdoch apologizes for all the times he's suspected Pendrick of murder and they carry on from there. Maybe Pendrick is stubbornly determined to finally win Murdoch over. Maybe one helps the other with some problem big or small. Or maybe they've gotten past all that and are now engaged in some grand adventure together (possibly with Julia as well). Whatever strikes your fancy, really, as long as the two of them are finally on the same side. (If you do write slash, I'm perfectly happy to ignore or skim over why William/Julia didn't work out rather than make one of them the villain. Or just pretend they never got back together after she moved to Buffalo. Whatever approach you like.)
For William Murdoch and Julia Ogden - I'd love to see something set after season five, about how they carry on once the first rush of excitement is over and they're faced with the actual details of what it means for Julia and Darcy to have "parted." Or Julia talking to her sister or parents or a friend about William (which could also be set earlier in the series). Or some occasion when William is faced with trying to fit into the world Julia grew up in. Or the two of them as partners facing some challenge, personal or professional. If you prefer not to write them as a pairing, some moment of friendship or collegiality would be good.
If you want to include all three, maybe put them on an adventure or have them tackle a problem or solve a case together, or just spend some time celebrating their shared excitement over science and its promise for the future. Or map out the future and write what happens to them later in their lives, like World War I. Almost anything goes, really, as long as it leaves them on friendly footing.
Finally, I'm happy to read fic dealing with the issues of the day. I'm also happy to read fic that avoids the issues of the day by focusing on a scenario where they aren't relevant. However, I'd rather not read a story where issues ought to be relevant and are ignored. Basically, please don't put two people in a same-sex relationship where everyone knows about it and no one objects, or pretend that being a woman creates no obstacles in a professional field, or act as though class differences don't matter. Murdoch and Ogden are shown as relatively progressive by the standards of their time, and I'd prefer to believe that Pendrick is too, but I don't think it's realistic to assume every person they meet will be the same way.
Fandom: Justified
Requested Characters: Raylan Givens, Tim Gutterson, Loretta McCready
After a questionable shooting, a U.S. Marshal is transferred back to his home state of Kentucky, where he has to deal with both the challenges of the job and friends and rivals from his past.
I've asked for three characters here, but I'm perfectly happy to receive a story with just Raylan and Loretta or just Raylan and Tim, so please don't feel you have to work in all three unless you really want to.
For Raylan and Tim, my primary request is to have Raylan NOT be the (main) source of trouble, just this once. Apart from that, almost anything goes. Gen, slash, casefic, downtime...it's all good. Have Raylan and Tim get to know each other a little better. Have Raylan help Tim out in some way. Show us what Tim thinks of Raylan or what Raylan thinks of Tim. Have them hang out. Show them getting together as a couple. Have someone from Tim's past show up. (Family? Old army buddy? Someone else?) Have one help the other through a difficult situation. Let Tim (or Art or Rachel) accidentally lead them all into trouble. Or put them on a standard case that's not personal for anyone and let everyone show off their Marshal skills. Because they're all awesome.
For Raylan and Loretta, I'd love anything that touches on Raylan's protectiveness of Loretta, and the hints that in some ways, she reminds him of himself. Does he keep continue to keep an eye on her? Encourage her to think about life outside of Harlan? Play the role his aunt played for him? How much does she know about what really happened with Mags and her father and does she ever learn more? Or maybe something with Loretta seeking help or unexpectedly helping Raylan? Or jump ahead to the future and see how things might turn out for Loretta later on, and what role Raylan might have played in getting her there.
I really don't have any suggestions for writing the three of them together, but if you have a great idea, go for it!
I'm fine with all the canon pairings for this show, if you want to include any for background or texture. I'd rather not have Raylan cheating on Winona, so if you're going to pair him up with Tim, then please keep him separated from Winona.
Final Notes
I know I've written more about some fandoms than others; please don't interpret that as a sign that I prefer one to another! I love all of these shows equally, and I'm equally interested in fic from any of them.
If somehow what I have above isn't enough, there's a little more on the things I like and don't like here. Please don't feel you have to read that, though, unless you really, really want more information.
Thank you so much for writing for me! I'm very excited to read whatever you come up with!
