The end of an era

I'm not comfortable agreeing to terms of service that I can't read, so it's probably time to delete my LJ.

I've been cross-posting for quite a while, so I don't mind being being here rather than there, but I'm sad to see LJ go.

I'm kind of irritated that there's apparently no way to delete my account without first agreeing to the TOS.

I wish I'd gone ahead with deletions back in January. But I didn't, so... chores for the weekend, I suppose.

I've started thinking about the various communities I own on LJ and wondering if it's wise to delete my account and give up control. Few of them are active now, but I'm hesitant to just delete them, and I also don't necessarily want to entirely give up control. But I also don't want to be over there. It's a difficult situation.

At the very least, I'll refrain from crossposting, and perhaps take my time in deciding what to do next.

Isn't it? I've been excerpts quoted various places, and it's just not something I want to agree to even apart from the language issues.

Admittedly, I haven't read the TOS. I don't know Russian, so all I've seen are the translated excerpts too. What I've seen looks scary knowing the current political climate in both Russia and the US. So, I'm done with LJ.

This occurred to me kind of out of the blue. Does anyone know what is happening to LJ? Has there been any announcement that I missed?

I believe LJ announced the changes on news around the same time they introduced the changes in the TOS. Of course, if you don't agree to the new TOS, you can't read the post while logged in. There seem to be a lot of feelings around both the TOS (which makes it clear that LJ is now subject to the laws of the Russian Federation) and the fact that the binding version of the new TOS is only available in Russian

Thanks for the info. That sounds indeed disconcerting. Not sure what I should do. I might just hang in there without agreeing and see what happens. Although I don't know what is the lesser evil, to agree and then delete the journal or not agree and keep the journal untouched?

I'm not sure what the lesser evil is either, honestly. And now I'm considering communities as well, and what I'll do with those.

I may end up agreeing and just not cross-posting any more, for the sake of communities.

Yes, I would also hate to lose membership in some communities. Therefore, I'll probably also stay lurking rather than posting.

I agreed despite my better judgment. Mostly just to see if anyone was still left on LJ. There are still a few. Idk what I'm going to do at this point. I think I want to delete. I never have backed up my journal, so maybe I should.

I may end up agreeing, as I've noted above, because I don't want to lose control of the communities I have over there. I'll probably stop cross-posting, but might continue using LJ in a limited fashion.
